KOMRAD

The Compact Open Mobile Reference Architecure And Design

Welcome to the KOMRAD Project Wiki!

The KOMRAD project aims to create a reference design for entry level mobile phones using Open Source Software, Open Hardware and Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components. The reference design is a fully functional mobile phone which can be used for experimentation, development, rapid prototyping and manufacturing. A simulated environment is also provided to test out the functionality of the mobile phone.

The project consists of both software and hardware. The software is derived entirely of Open Source Software available and customized for low cost handsets. The hardware board is based on the Analog Devices Blackfin processor with peripherals added mobile phones functionality. A fully functional would also be provided. The simulator would be based upon GNURadio.

Currently we are working on the software package and its architecture. The software consisnts of an microkernel based OS (L4 Iguana), a ncurses based MMI framework, a suite of mobile applications including games and browsers, a GSM and CDMA Protocol Stack and a PC connectivity suite. The architecture document has all the details.

We are actively looking for volunteers and contributors who can help in design, coding and prototyping. If you have the passion and belief of building a world class product then pls. do drop us a line at here.

Here is a brief presentation on this project, given at Barcamp Bangalore.
